The glazed white porcelain Hunting Dogs Fighting a Bear painted with overglaze decoration offers insight into the artist’s excellent training as a sculptor. Dominikus Auliczek (1734–1804) came from Polička and apprenticed in nearby Litomyšl at the sculpture workshop of renowned Baroque master Jiří František Pacák. From there he moved on to Vienna, where he apprenticed under sculptor Johann Georg Leitner

while attending the local art academy. He continued his studies in Paris, London and Rome, where he was awarded first prize of the Accademia di San Luca. In 1764 he became a modeller at Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg. There he built on the work of Franz Anton Bustelli, who had made the porcelain manufactory famous for its Rococo Commedia dell'arte figurines and chinoiserie. Dominikus Auliczek headed the manufactory from 1773 until his death in 1804. (lmp).
